Battery Bruff

Battery Bruff (1919-1920) - Battery Bruff was a reinforced concrete, Taft Period 5 inch coastal gun battery on Fort Funston, San Francisco County, California. The battery was named after Col. Lawrence L. Bruff (Cullum 2595), Ordnance Department, who died 4 Aug 1911, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Battery construction started in 1917, was completed in 1918 and transferred to the Coast Artillery for use 30 Jan 1919 at a cost of $ 3,572.16. Deactivated in 1920. World War I (1917-1918) Part of the Harbor Defense of San Francisco. Originally built as a temporary Taft Period concrete coastal gun battery with two 5" M1900 guns mounted on M1903 pedestal carriages. Funds for the construction were allocated 17 Feb 1917. Both guns and carriages were furnished from Battery Sherwood, Fort Winfield Scott, in 1918. This was a small single story battery with some wooden construction including an earth covered wooden repository for ammunition storage. The guns were removed in 1921 and the carriages were ordered scrapped in 1920.
