Fort Maginnis (1) (1880-1890) - Established 22 Aug 1880 by Capt. Daingerfield Parker, 3rd U.S. Infantry, and named for Maj. Martin Maginnis, 11th Minnesota Infantry. Abandoned 20 Jul 1890.

Fort Maginnis (1) History

Established to suppress Indian and civilian rustlers after the end of the Indian wars. One of five modern forts built after the Custer Massacre of 1876, Fort Keogh(1877), Fort Custer(1877), Fort Missoula(1877), Fort Assinniboine(1879) and Fort Maginnis(1880).

Current Status

Ruins only with some markings.

Location: About 8 miles northeast of the ghost town of Giltedge, Montana, on Fort Maginnis road.
