Fort Myer (1862-Present) - First established as a Union defense in 1862 during the U.S. Civil War as Fort Wipple. Named after MG Amiel W. Wipple, who died 7 May 1863 of wounds suffered at the Battle of Chancellorsville. Fort Wipple was renamed Fort Myer on 4 Feb 1881 for BG Albert J. Myer, first U.S. Army Chief Signal Officer. Active military installation.
