Fort Niobrara (1880-1906) - Established in 1880 by Maj. John J. Upham, 5th U.S. Cavalry. Named after the Niobrara River. Abandoned in 1906.

Fort Niobrara History

Established 22 Apr 1880 to protect settlers from hostile Sioux Indians and to oversee the Spotted Tail Indian Agency. Abandoned on 22 Oct 1906 as a military post but remained a cavalry remount station until 1912 when it was turned over to the Department of Interior.

Current Status

No period guns or mounts in place.
