Presidio of Monterey (1) (1770-1866, 1902-Present) - A Spanish post established in 1770 by Governor Gaspar de Portola in Monterey County, California. Active military installation. Also known as El Real Presidio de San Carlos de Monterey, El Castillio, Fort Hill, Fort Jones, Fort Stockton, Fort Mervine, Fort Savannah, Fort Halleck, Fort Cape of Pines, Fort Fremont, Monterey Redoubt, Monterey Ordnance Depot, Monterey Barracks, Ord Barracks, Monterey Military Reservation, Camp John P. Pryor and Camp Murray.
