Mission San Antonio de Bacuqua History
The Apalachee mission Indians (converted and non-converted) rebelled against harsh treatment by the Spanish friars on the evening of 19 Feb 1647. The rebels killed eight Spaniards including three friars at Mission San Antonio de Bacuqua and burned all eight of the local missions. A punitive expedition was sent from St. Augustine and a battle ensued in which both sides suffered a large number of casualties. The rebels were eventually convinced to surrender and the rebellion ended.
