Fort Payne (1) (1836-1838) - A U.S. Army post established by Captain John C. Payne in 1836 during the Cherokee Removal period in DeKalb County, Alabama. Named for Captain John C. Payne. Abandoned in 1838.

Fort Payne (1) History

Established in1837 by Captain John C. Payne in 1836 as a stockaded log blockhouse to control the Cherokee population.

Current Status

Only a marker and chimney remain in the Town of Fort Payne, DeKalb County, Alabama.
