Camp Date Creek (1866-1873) - A U.S. Army camp first established in 1866 during the Apache Wars by Captain James W. Weir, 14th U.S. Infantry, in Yavapai County, Arizona. Moved to Skull Valley the reestablished as Camp McPherson 1867. Renamed Camp Date Creek in 1868. Abandoned in 1873. Also known as Camp on Date Creek.

History of Camp Date Creek

Established by Captain James W. Weir, 14th U.S. Infantry, in 1866 during the Apache Wars. Moved on 12 Oct 1866 to Skull Valley. Reestablished as Camp McPherson 11 May 1867. Renamed Camp Date Creek in December 1868.

The post engaged in constant guard duties, escort duties and scouting patrols for hostile Indians. Even escort duty was dangerous, on 17 Jul 1869 the mail escort was attacked about fifteen miles from the post by a band of hostile Apache and two privates were killed.

The post was abandoned on 30 Aug 1873 by Company B, 23rd U.S. Infantry leaving behind only an 8 man detail to guard government stores. the company proceeded to Fort Whipple.
