Fort San Felipe del Morro (1539-1961) - A Spanish Colonial fort established in 1539 near San Juan, San Juan County, Puerto Rico. Under Spanish control from 1539 to 1898. Came under United States control as a result of the Spanish American War and the Treaty of Paris (1898). Abandoned as a U.S. Army fortification in 1961. Also known as Castillo San Phillipe del Morro, Castillo de San Phillipe de Morro, Castillo de San Phillipe del Morro, Castillo del Morro, Castillo el Morro, El Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, El Morro Fort, Fort Brook, Fort du Moore, Fuerte San Felipe del Morro, Morro Castle, Morro Fort and San Phillipe del Morro. HistoryEstablished in 1539 as a Spanish Colonial fort guarding the entrance to San Juan Harbor. --TBF-- Abandoned in 1961.
