Named for Lieutenant Colonel Alexander R. Thompson, 6th U.S. Infantry, who was killed in the Battle of Okeechobee, 25 Dec 1837. The post was abandoned after the Second Seminole War and rebuilt for the Third Seminole War, finally abandoned in 1855.
