Fort Forman (1755-1764) - A French & Indian War settler fort established in 1755 near Vance, Hampshire County, West Virginia. Named Fort Forman after the Forman family. Abandoned as a fortification about 1764. Also known as Forman's Fort and the name is sometimes spelled Foreman.

Fort Forman Roadside Marker on HWY 28.

History of Fort Forman

Established in 1755 as a settler’s fort, but militia troops were occasionally garrisoned there. The fort was probably a blockhouse surrounded by a stockade that was built as a refuge for the Forman family and their neighbors who lived nearby.

The fort was built by Captain William Forman, a son of the original settler, Benjamin Forman. William was later killed at Grave Creek in 1777 in an Indian ambush known as "Foreman’s Defeat" along with 21 of his men, including two of his sons.

Fort Forman was abandoned as a fortification in 1764 at the end of Pontiac's War.
