Fort Galt

Fort Galt (1857-1857) - A Seminole War III Fort established in 1857 near Bloomingdale, Hillsborough County, Florida. Named Fort Galt after Captain Patrick Henry Galt, 4th U.S. Artillery, who died on 9 Jan 1851. Post probably abandoned in March 1857. Also known as Camp Galt. History Fort Galt was reportedly located near present-day Bloomingdale at the Alafia River Bridge crossing on FL Hwy 640. The site was some 20 miles east of Fort Brooke at Tampa Bay. Fort Gait was a temporary fort established on 19 Jan 1857, by Bvt Major John B. Scott (Cullum 274), 4th U.S. Artillery, and Company I, with 82 men. The post's 1st return available was dated January 1857 and the last return was dated one month later for February 1857.
