King Mountain FAA Radar Site (1996-Active) - A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Long Range Radar (LLR) site established in 1996 near Crane, Upton County, Texas. The site is used to identify and track military and civilian aircraft movements within a 200-mile+ radius and to provide air-ground radio communication with those aircraft. Assigned a Joint Surveillance System (JSS) ID of J-26A and an FAA ID of ZQOM. Active FAA Radar Site. HistoryThis site became an FAA radar site in 1996, furnishing radar track data to the FAA ARTCC's and to USAF Direction Centers. The initial FAA search radar was an ARSR-4 3D radar circa 1996. The site is shown on satellite imagery on 7 Jan 1996 with the building complete and the radome up. This site was meant to replace the Odessa FAA Radar Site (J-26) which is still in use. The radar site data is available to the USAF/NORAD Battle Control System-Fixed (BCS-F) operations centers (EADS & WADS) as well as the FAA Albuquerque ARTCC (ZAB) and adjacent ARTCCs.
