Fort Scammel (1808-1898) - Established 1808 on House Island in Portland Harbor, Maine as a Second System Fort and rebuilt as a Third System Fort by Thomas L. Casey in 1862. Named after Col. Alexander Scammel, Adjutant general of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
Fort Scammel History
Part of the Harbor Defense of Portland, Maine. Designed for harbor defense, with batteries to protect the Portland harbor shipping channel, along with Fort Preble and Fort Gorges.
The original Fort Scammel had but 9 Guns and the rebuilt Fort Scammel was to have had 71 guns.
Current Status
Privately owned but open to the public for fee which includes a boat ride. For more information, call 799-8188 in Portland.
