Outer Brewster Island Military Reservation (1913-1947) - A World War I Coastal Military Reservation first established on Outer Brewster Island, Suffolk County, Massachusetts in 1913. Named Outer Brewster Island Military Reservation in G.O. 6, 1937. Deactivated in 1947.

World War I (1917-1918)

Part of the Harbor Defense of Boston, Massachusetts.

All 17.5 acres of Outer Brewster Island were acquired by the U.S. Government from a Benjamin Dean on 12 Jun 1913 for the sum of $ 2,900.

World War II (1941-1945)

In 1942 construction began on Outer Brewster Island Military Reservation for a 6" gun battery, Battery 209 later named Battery Jewell. The battery was completed on 31 Jan 1944 and the guns were test fired in February 1944.

A small post was built on the island that included three reinforced concrete barracks, a distillation plant for fresh water, some metal frame buildings and a Radar tower disguised as a water tower. The garrison numbered about 125 men.

The Outer Brewster Island Military Reservation was deactivate on 31 Jul 1947 and physically turned over as excess to the GSA on 1 Nov 1951. The GSA sold the property to Francis X. McCabe on 18 Jun 1953. The State of Massachusetts acquired the property from subsequent owners on 19 April 1973 for use as part of the state park system.
