Caribou FAA Radar Site (1996c-Active) - A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Long Range Radar (LRR) site first established circa 1996c near Caribou, Aroostook County, Maine. The site is used to identify and track military and civilian aircraft movements within a 200-mile radius and to provide air-ground radio communication with those aircraft. Assigned a JSS ID of J-63, and an FAA ID of QYD. Active FAA Radar Site. HistoryThis site became a new FAA radar site circa 1996, furnishing radar track data to the FAA ARTCCs and to USAF Direction Centers. This site was built on the former Loring Air Force Base Nike Integrated Fire Control (IFC) Site L-58C. It first appears as an FAA radar site on available satellite photos on 8 May 1996 with the building, radar tower, and radome in place. The initial FAA ARSR-4 primary search radar remains in operation. The secondary radar at this site is an ATCBI-6M Beacon set first commissioned on 27 Jul 2007. The radar site data is now available to the USAF/NORAD Battle Control System-Fixed (BCS-F) operations centers (EADS & WADS) as well as the FAA Boston ARTCC (ZBW) and adjacent ARTCCs. Other federal agencies have access to the data under the Homeland Security umbrella.
