Pyramid Lake Paiute War (1860) - A war between Northern Paiute, Shoshone, and Bannock Indians against the U.S. The war began in May 1860 near Pyramid Lake in the Utah Territory and ended with a cease-fire in August 1860. Two pitched battles were fought in which approximately eighty settlers and an unknown number of Indians were killed. A cease-fire was established in August 1860 but there was no treaty. Also known as the Paiute War, Washoe Indian War, and the Pah Ute War.
A series of U.S. Army and settler forts were established to protect settler and mining communities.
